About the Artist

Becks Butler is a recent graduate of the MA Art and Research Collaboration, IADT. Her work explores origins, structures of human behaviour and performance of subject in photography. She exhibited her solo show Pushing Boundaries at illuminations in 2017 and has presented work recently in group shows including The Queeratorial at Pallas Projects, Torch at A4 Sounds and meatspace at the RIA. Her collections have been purchased by the Royal Irish Academy and private collectors. Becks was awarded Wexford’s 2019 Percent for Art Commission with her collaborators Astrid Newman and Ciara Roche. She most recently collaborated with PhotoIreland Foundation’s Critical Academy to bring Performing the Post-human: Subject in Photography to the Museum of Contemporary Photography of Ireland 2019.

Her new work investigates the performance of labour in agriculture. Coming from a familial and career focused background in agriculture, she has developed an interest in merging that background with her present and ongoing career as an artist. Becks is interested in how farm operators pursue absolute dedication to their labour, exploring individuals as they perform themselves in familiar environments.
