About the Artist
Brian studied photography at the Gloucestershire College of Art and Design in the U.K. and graduated in 1980. After working as a commercial photographer in London for 15 years he relocated to Dublin in 1995, where he decided to specialise in traditional film photography and an alternative chemical process known as lith printing. Still life, landscape and travel photographs made on medium format black and white film are then individually hand crafted as silver gelatine lith prints in his darkroom. This unpredictable technique produces bold graphic images with delicate warm tones, and results in each limited edition print being unique in terms of colour, density and contrast. Few photographic papers are “lithable”, and Brian only uses a museum-weight chlorobromide paper considered by many to have been the best: Forte PW17, manufactured in Hungary and discontinued since 2007. Building on this body of work over the past 24 years, he has exhibited nationally and internationally, selling to individual and corporate collectors. In 2010 he was awarded the Laureate Prix Cafefoto at Les Recontres d’Arles festival in France and subsequently exhibited at Centre Iris in Paris as part of the official Mois de la Photo. More recently, he has had solo shows at Alliance Francaise, Dublin in 2015, and the Arklow Library Gallery, County Wicklow in 2017.
