The body of work titled Fantasy focuses on perceptions relating to female identity and sexual desire. Instead of presuming that sexual encounters must be ‘special’ or ‘romantic’ the artist has conducted an anonymous survey that gave women the freedom to express their fantasies and desires. The findings and results are open for interpretation and do not have to have a fixed conclusion.Through photography, the artist attempts to communicate an alternative to the mainstream perceptions of female identity and sexual desire. One woman may imagine pleasure in isolation while another may fantasise about being desired by multiple suitors.
About the Artist
Freja Blomstrand moved from Stockholm, Sweden to Dublin in September 2017 to study photography. She is now in her third and final year in the BA in Arts & Photographic Media course at Griffith College Dublin. With photography as her tool, Freja focuses on questioning and challenging relevant topics in today’s society, such as women’s issues and mental health.
