Foul Reduced to Sell uses photography, type and captions (the latter taken directly from apps such as DoneDeal and Adverts) to pry into the life of a fictional taxidermist twitcher. Playing on the offbeat and voyeuristic tones of amateur animal photography featured on DoneDeal and Adverts, images focus on the subjects’ female body parts, parts that – for the human race – are considered sexual and arousing. The captions displayed alongside the imagery are inclusive of typos found on DoneDeal and Adverts and often do not relate to the accompanying image or may relate to an aspect of the animal which cannot be seen.
About the Artist
Marian Balfe is an artist and designer based in Dublin. She uses a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and bookmaking to navigate fragmented connections to place. Awards include the Thomas Dammann Junior Memorial Prize, Longford Student Arts Bursary, Roscommon Visual Arts Bursary and the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Emerging Artist Bursary for the creation and development of new work. Her most recent work has featured in Temple Bar Art Book Fair and ARTWORKS 2019 at VISUAL, Carlow. Marian received a BA in Fine Art (Paint) and Visual Culture in 2015 (NCAD) and a BSc in Architecture in 2009 (UCD).
