About the Artist
Maureen Burke was born in Leicester, England, currently living in Dublin and working as an artist and teacher. She completed a BA (hons) in Fine Art at IADT Dublin, followed by an MA in Public Cultural Theory, also at IADT. She also completed a PhD in Art Education. Her print-work explores everyday spaces, experiences and situations that summon an emotive response and the need to make sense of it through the primary act of drawing. Concerned with mark-making and the structure of appearances, more than what they represent objectively, she enjoys the expressive, sometimes accidental qualities achieved using carborundum, and dry point, along with the immediacy of etching on aluminium. These processes have ‘surprise’ qualities that frequently dictate the direction of her work.
